Year 6 will listen to a very important announcement on the wireless by the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain. From this, they set about learning about the main events of World War Two and have had a wonderful time doing so. We will also use the book ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ by Michelle Magorian as a springboard for all of our lessons and activities. At the start of the term, the children (like William Beech in the book) will be evacuated out of the danger of the city and into the safety of the countryside. This then will inform their evacuation letters and historical stories. As part of Remembrance Day, the Year 6 children will write their own war poems and present a special assembly to the whole school. We will make recipes whilst learning about rationing and will investigate parachutes and insulating materials as part our science. We will also write newspaper articles based on a World War Two object that was found by the Gardening Club as well as the making of our very own Anderson Shelters. Our term will culminate with a special assembly to parents that incorporates historical dancing, singing and other amazing snippets from the last 3 months of history work.
